Why you should check out Louise Young

 When I studied make-up in London I had the pleasure of meeting Louise Young. She came to my make-up school to talk us through some of her new products, and having already owned some of her brushes, it's safe to say I was excited. 

Louise Young was working as a Make-up Artist when she injured her hand and was worried it would effect her work. It was that which made her decide to start a brush line she'd been thinking of for a while. And after using her brushes, you can tell they were created by a make-up artist. They are good quality, withstand constant cleaning and there is every brush you will ever need. This is one of the few brush lines that have such a variety of brushes you don't often see.

Especially what I'm talking about today, Eye Brushes. Many of which coming in multiple sizes depending on your eyeshape/lid space - genius. 

So here are my top 3 Louise Young eye brushes that are worth checking out:

The LY038B Tapered shadow brush 3
It's the smallest of the 3 tapered shadow brushes which makes it the perfect crease brush. Especially if you're like me and don't have much eyelid space to work with. I use it every single day,

The LY13 Mini socket 

Perfect for many things. Shadow under the eye? Smudging eyeliner? A bold cut crease?
Check, check, check!

The LY24A - Superfine liner brush

All of her eyeliner brushes are the bomb. They were the first brushes of hers that I tried because they're the finest liner brushes I've seen on the market. I know different people like different liner brushes, but no matter what your preference is, check hers out. Short, long, fat, fine, superfine. There will be one.

Although I'm talking about eye brushes, a shoutout goes to the Super Foundation Brush (LY34) as I just can't leave it out. Excellent foundation brush, applies products evenly without caking it on and is also absolutely massive so does your entire face in seconds. 

It's also worth a mention that for the quality these are, they are very well priced. Many of the brushes are only £10. I constantly clean my brushes with Isopropyl Alcohol to sanatise them (as does Louise Young and many professional make-up artists for that matter. Don't be fooled by expensive brush cleaners) and years later they're still the same as when I bought them.

Summer Make-up Bag

So it's not news I haven't written a post in a while. Okay, I haven't since February.

Since then there's been so many things I've found and have loved that I could write about. Rather than writing lots of reviews I thought I'd give you a peak into my make-up bag from the last couple of months.

Lots of things I've found and loved bundled into one!

The Base

So I've never spoken about the Dr.Jart BB cream before but it's incredible. It feels like it does wonders for your skin, it has a beautiful glow to it with a dewy finish and it's SPF 25. It just makes you look instantly healthy. Annoyingly it only comes in one shade so it's more of a summer product for me as I'm usually super duper pale. But don't get me wrong, it's not dark and will work for most people, I'm just the whitest person ever. It's often on offer so I'd suggest waiting to get the best price.

I've been wearing this just with the Collection concealer and sometimes a dusting of MAC Mineralize SkinFinish (which I couldn't find to photograph).

As for the All Nighter Setting Spray, you need this in summer. My skin used to eat make-up.

Cheeks

Mary-Lou Manizer is a bit of a full on highlighter. You need the smallest amount but it's stunning.

NARS Laguna is just, well, a classic bronzer. Love it.

Eyes

I was looking for a highstreet eye primer and came across the Soap and Glory one which definitely makes a difference. I put my most used MAC shades in quad and recently the look I go for is Naked Lunch all over, Charcoal Brown and Soba in the crease and Mulch for a smokey look in the evenings.

Lips

The YSL in Peach Passion is my go to summer shade. I think it's definitely worth the money. Recently I've found Macaroon by Topshop which is a pink shade with a bit of peach to it which I think is lovely too!

Brighter Place

Gahhhh, so I've waited to write about this post since July. JULY.

At the start of the Summer I was asked to do the make-up for a music video for RedTails debut single Brighter Place. I of course jumped at the chance and I'm glad that I did!

Firstly, the band are great! Lovely, talented people who are clearly so passionate about what they do.
The song is fantastic and if you like it too it's available to download here.
And lastly, not to blow my own trumpet, the video looks amazing.

The video was shot in two parts over two days. 

For the first look I got a message saying "Think David Bowie as thin white duke, The Fifth Elementm, Paramore Now music video."

What a beautiful, beautiful sentence. 

I had the freedom to be really creative with this look and I just love how it came out.

I went with icy blues and pale skin and worked with the sharp lines of her hairstyle. 

This is Ciara Baron from A Trickle Of Meaning, and doesn't she look amazing? If you're not a follower of her blog (and why not?) go over and take a look!

For the second part I created a look for the singer of Redtails, the beautiful Colette.
Contrasting to the cold blues and whites on Ciara, I used warm gold and copper tones for Colette.

Colette has her own individual style that we really wanted to work with rather than change. The colours suited her skin tone and, (by complete chance as I only met her on the day) went PERFECTLY with her highlights.

 I love the footage of Colette, as well as Rick (keys/vocals) and Dan (drums), because it just shows what passion really is. How it feels to love what you do.

 The two days I worked on this video were brilliant purely because it was a bunch of people doing what they absolutely love. The band, obviously. Me, well duh.
But also the actors and the crew. Which was mostly made up of students.
It was just a great thing to be a part of and to watch.

So I haven't written a post in almost a month, partly because so much has been happening but also because I've been suffering "bloggers block".

Similar to writers block, except I'm in no way a writer.

So this is a look that I created for a college assesment that I thought I'd share with you all as it's so easy to achieve but perfect for special events!

Skin

So here I went for a "dewy" finish because it's my preference, but if you want a matte finish or are going to be photographed lots use a powder! For the face I started with Benefit high beam and went over with Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation. I used NARS Laguna Bronzer very lightly (this has strong pigmentation) as a subtle bronzer and the highlight from the Sleek Face Form contour kit. I also worked this over the neck and shoulders as it's a strapless dress.

 Highlighting the shoulders and collarbones is always beautiful on brides.

Eyes

I kept the eyes soft so that it's a really versatile look. It could go with so many different dresses and events. Pop on some individual lashes and this could be a bridal.

I used the Urban Decay naked pallete, Virgin under the brow, and Sin, Toasted blended over the eye with Hustle in the crease. Use a fluffy blending brush to blend this into a soft smokey eye.

I used a black eyeshadow along the lash line as it gives a softer look than a liquid eyeliner.

Lips

The lips are really simple, I'd definitely use a pink for this. I mixed a pink lip shade from my Kryolan lip pallete and used a clear MAC lipglass over the top. 

For a long day when you want your lipstick to last, apply your lipstick, then place a thin piece of tissue over your lips and powder through it to set it!

Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo

Maybelline Eye-Studio 24 Hour Colour Tattoo cream shadows available here for £4.99.

Oh wow, I really like these. I like these a lot.

These have actually been around for a while, and I completely ignored them. And I'll tell you why, dear friends, but not just yet. I picked up two colours in the shades "Pink Gold" and "On and on Bronze".
However I've noticed different stores and countries have different names for the colours which might get confusing. What's the deal there Maybelline? 

The reason I actually wanted to try these was to wear as a base before eye shadow so I picked up the colours I felt went best with my Urban Decay Naked Pallet. They're a match made in heaven for that. Can you see it? Ugh I feel like Cupid for the cosmetic world. "Pink Gold" would go perfectly as a base for the pink shades in the naked pallet such as Sin or Toasted. And "On and on Bronze" will really bring out the browns and golds such as Half Baked or Smog. They'll make any shadow last all day.

The thing is, I wasn't expecting to love these products to wear on their own. As much as I love the dewy look and how perfect they'd be for summer, I don't go for cream shadows.Well, the exception is these. They don't crease, they don't flake and they really do last hours (possibly not 24 hours but I won't be putting that one to the test). When I washed off my swatches they also didn't budge so I feel it's safe to say they're also waterproof to some degree. Like that.

The colours on their own are also beautiful! I literally fell in love when I swatched them in store. Just look at them, that bronze! If you're a fair English rose (like me!) then this pink is perfect for you.

Maybe the best thing is how soft and creamy they are to apply, they're easy to blend and won't drag across your eye lid. Nobody wants that do they? 

So far I love dabbing them with my finger over my eyes when I'm running late and just want a little something. Effortless and so beautiful. A small amount will give a shimmer and a sweep of colour which I like with the pink to brighten the eye, and the bronze I build up the colour intensity and blend out for a natural smokey eye.

I feel I ignored these for so long as the advertising was wrong. I only ever saw the turquoise or the  bright purple used in really bold looks. The reason they're amazing is because of the range of neutral colours and that they can be so wearable. I'm sorry I doubted you Maybelline, these will always be in my make-up bag from now.
Through sickness and through health. Like for ever and ever. 

Natural Glow Make-Up

So as a part of college last week I did the hair, make-up and photography to produce a photo shoot on the theme of "No make-up, make-up". This is all about creating a natural look with flawless skin but so it appears the model isn't wearing make-up at all. It's commonly used in skincare adverts (sneaky). I thought I'd share with you the look I went for with a glow to the skin.

My beautiful friend Fen Barr was sweet enough to come model for me and how fantastic does she look?

skin 

I started with Benefit High Beam on her cheek bones, brow bone and her cupids bow. I also re-applied this over the foundation too to give a beautiful highlight to her skin. Fen naturally has such clear skin, so I blended two shades of Kryolan Ultra Fluid Foundation to give an even but not heavy coverage. I used Kryolan Derma Colour to cover any dark patches or blemishes and MAC Select MoistureCover concealer around the eyes.

I used the highlight from the Sleek Contour Kit to highlight areas of her face, although this has small glitter specks in so be careful when photographing this. I then used Nars Laguna bronzer to contour and add warmth back to her face.

Eyes

Keeping to the natural look I used natural matte eye shadows to add some colour and shape to her eyes and Urban Decay shadow in Virgin to highlight the inner corner and under the brow bone. I LOVE this shade.

I also took a natural matte shadow through her brows with a small angled brush and brushed a clear mascara through to hold them in place. I put some black eyeliner onto a very thin brush and painted inbetween her lashes to give a light natural defintion. To finish off the eyes I put a small amount of white eye pencil on the water line.

Lips

I used a lipstick in a natural shade that had a slight peach tone to go with her beautifully tanned skin and added a lttle MAC lipglass to the centre of her lips and blended out. This enlarges the look of the lips and a slight shine for a healthy look.

Little Shop Of Horrors

So the past week I have been super duper busy helping the cast and crew of my local drama company, BATS, with their production of the Little Shop Of Horrors. I thought I'd share with you some snaps of what was such a fun week!
 Normally doing make-up for shows can be so hectic it's a nightmare, but every night was fantastic and so much fun. The cast and crew were incredible and did such a brilliant job with the whole production. I've always been a huge fan of the music and the show so I took a night off so I could go see the it in all it's glory and I loved it.

As for the make-up, the first half is fairly chilled out with your standard stage make-up and a quick black eye for Audrey. It's after the interval where the real fun begins as people start to get eaten!

I'm not sure if I've ever actually mentioned this on my blog, but I plan to specialise in prosthetics. I just happened to become girly and fall in love with beauty make-up when I started my training. However my heart has and always will be devoted to horror. So you can see why I love this musical so much.

Feed me all night long!

For the comedic final number almost the entire cast had to be made up as "zombies". So much fun. Of course this was still stage make-up though so this was quick, easy but effective for the audience. For the (very) few people that didn't have incredibly fast changes, small latex pieces were applied.
Respect to Liam, a chorus member who let us cover his eye with a latex piece of an eyeball hanging out and still go dance and sing on stage, every night. What a babe.

Covering imperfections.

Just a short one today to carry on from my last camouflage make-up post!

So recently I posted about how I was learning camouflage make-up to cover tattoos. But of course it also covers discolouring, hypo-pigmentation, hyper-pigmentation, blemishes and some scarring.

Here's a picture (with no filter or camera tricks) of a covered hypo-pigmentation that I did this week.

Personally I think this came out really effective and I'm pleased with the result.
So of course I had to share it with you!

This was really simple and really quick, it's just done by using camouflage concealers (personally I use Kryolan Derma Colour) and matching the area to the natural skin tone and layering this up!

Maybelline The Falsies

 It's Tanya Burrs favourite mascara...

I don't need to say more.

After reading so many good things, this week I picked up The Falsies mascara by Maybelline and finally gave it a whirl. And what a better time to do it than when it's £2 off at Boots, making it only £5.99.

Ps. does anyone else want to curl up and cry when this happens to their nails?

Mine is in "Black Drama" which is a darker matte black to the original, and it's shown by the lace detail!
I love that aspect of it, it's very black so perfect for definition.

The brush to me looked pretty scary at first. I don't tend to use plastic brushes so I'm used to the classic mascara brush wand. This seems to have spiky brush hairs at all angles - a little crazy. 

The stem of the wand is flexible as you can see by the indent which I do feel helps.

Maybelline call it a "spooned" brush which they've actually patented, to me that just means curved. Nothing new but it does work well with the shape of natural lashes and catches every lash. I feel this also adds curl to the lashes but not lots.
To me that's okay, I look for definition in a mascara but if you're after curl I'd recommend the No7 Exquisite Curl mascara. 

I feel it lengthens lashes pretty well and does add volume.
 It claims no clumps which I'd say is almost true. What is really good about it is that it does layer up very well if you want more from it! However it's important when using any mascara to not let the mascara on the lashes dry in-between doing this.

As you can see it clearly makes a good difference. 

For £5.99 I definitely think it's worth a buy and I would recommend!

Everyday Make-up Bag

Short but sweet.

10 Make-Up products I carry with me everywhere for an everyday look.

Before I start I should explain that I travel a lot. I split my week in 3 by staying at either my Dads, Mums or my boyfriends. I'm never at a house for more than two or 3 days, so I always carry my basic make-up with me everywhere. So this is probably different from other peoples "What's in my Make-Up Bag" posts. 

Cosmetic Bag by Cath Kidston.

This make-up bag, bought for my by my beautiful sister, is perfect as it fits all my essentials and doesn't take up much room!

Base!

I only carry around 1 brush with me and it's the Real Techniques stippling brush. I use it for my concealer, foundation and powder so it's a great multi-tool. 

 I use Collection 2000's Lasting Perfection concealer to cover redness and blemishes and I use my MAC Select MoistureCover Concealer around my eyes and over drier areas.

I chop and change my foundation constantly, this week I've been carrying around Rimmel London's Wake Me Up Foundation. 

Powder is nothing special, It's Rimmel Clear Complexion pressed powder.

Eyes!

In my March Favourites I wrote about how much I love L'oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim eye-liner. Winged liner has currently replaced eye-shadow in my daily make-up, because I'm too lazy for both.

The mascara I'm currently carrying is L'oreal Volume Million Lashes in Extra Black. I tend to change mascara all the time between this and Clinique High Impact.  They're both fantastic.

Now that I have a fringe I spend less time on my eyebrows so I'm currently using Rimmel London Eyebrow Pencil in Black/Brown. This saves space too as I don't need a brush anymore.

Despite them being covered, I still check my brows everyday and carry tweezers with me everywhere. 

I don't know why.

My father brought these back from a spa in New Zealand for me. It pains me to say they're the best tweezers I've ever used and I'm sorry I can't lead you to where to find them.

Lips!

I also wrote about this in my March Favourites it's the Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in shade Honey. I actually tend to just throw this in my handbag and apply it on the go. I change what lip product I carry around probably weekly because I like a bold lip, but this is great for on the go (which it seems I always am). It also saves me from carrying round a lip balm too.

Body Painting Competition!

So for those that have been reading previous posts you'll know that I've been really busy preparing for a competition I'd entered and therefore neglected my blog!

Thankfully it's now over and I'm back and writing again!

Zodiac!

The theme of our Body Art was Signs of the Zodiac and, purely because of seeing beautiful sequin skirts in every clothes store I walked past, I was inspired to do Pisces.  It was a 3 hour timed competition so it was rushed but I enjoyed every second of it. 

The whole day is great fun and I'm thrilled that I cam in 2nd place! Takes a bow!

Products!

The majority of what I used is Kryolan products! So I'm sorry if you're a fan of another company!
I've been taught with almost all Kryolan products, I own many and they're what I'm familiar with. They're pigmentation is also fantastic for body art. However their colour hairspray which I used for the dark blue hair, is new to me and I was in love with the result! It gave the exact colour on the tin with a slight sparkle and really topped off my look!

I also have fallen head over heels in love with the shell prosthetics I used as nipple covers! I bought mine uncoloured and then used latex and Inglot pure pigment powders to colour mine to match the sequin skirt.

They're from a New Zealand company called Body FX. You can find them online and place orders but Charles Fox also stock them in their Covent Garden store. They have a HUGE range of foam latex prosthetics and the detail is so delicate, I am desperate to do something with their rose pieces.

I'll write another post and put up the professional photographs sometime next week.

Just thought I'd get back into the swing of writing again where I've been unwell and so busy.

MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation

Whoopsie, I'm late to the party!

I've heard so many wonderful things about this product and how it's super duper for dry skin so I have finally gone out and bought it.

Where I have dry skin I often find with even foundations that I love, they become flaky on my skin quite quickly. This is a gel formula intended for dry skin to solve that very problem. I loved this product as soon as I apply it. It completely changes the appearence of your skin!
I also was a little naughty and bought the Select Moisturecover concealer to apply around my eyes, really loving this!

Packaging.

The packaging is simple but I like it that it's in a tube. It's not bulky or made from glass so it's great to just chuck in your handbag, and as you know I love handbag essentials! It's also a back to MAC product which if you're not familiar with is where you can save up 6 of your empty MAC products and return to the store for a lipstick of your choice. Love that. 

Coverage.

It's got a medium to high coverage and just instantly looks like you have a new skin. It's easily build able and covers redness and blemishes easily. It's also SPF 15 which is fantastic! 

I apply it with a stipple brush (recently I quite like the real techniques one). As it has such a high coverage a little goes a very long way. For an easy day time look I probably only use a pea sized amount before buffing it into my skin.I think this also justifies the amount I spent on it too. At £24 it's more than I'd usually spend on a foundation for myself but I'm hoping it will last me a long time.
Because it's quite a heavy foundation I use the Select Moisturecover concealer around and under my eyes rather than the foundation. It's wonderful for dry skin and I always find it brightens my eyes more.

Finish.

It has a dewy finish which I tend to go for anyway so that's a plus. It's definitely dewy rather than glittery which you sometimes find in cheaper products. It really does help to brighten the appearance of dry skin.

Overall!

This is so far the best foundation I've tried to solve my dry skin problems. However if I'm having a really dry skin day I need to have a good scrub with an exfoliator before applying make-up, but that's just life really. It lasts the majority of my day but not ALL day. However, I don't powder all over after applying which would set the make-up for longer so I can't really complain. Once my skin is prepped and moisturised this doesn't flake which is the reason I bought it so overall, fantastic. 

I bought this over a month ago and haven't used another foundation since, if you have dry skin go give this a try!

No7 Cleansers for all skin types!

With the money off vouches and the 3 for 2 offer this month, I'm in No7 heaven. At the start of the year I picked up a gift set (a gift to myself!) in the Boots Sale to try out some products in the Beautiful Skin range. 

I was pleasantly surprised and purchased some cleansers from the range. 

I decided to review for you a selection of their cleansers aimed at different skin types. All No7 are hypo-allergenic and just plain dandy really.

Top to bottom:  No7 Hot Cloth Cleanser £9.95,
 Cleansing Water for normal to oily skin £9,
 Cleansing Balm for dry/very dry skin £9.

So I'll start with the Cleansing water for normal to oily skin. I'll say now that this is not my skin type. So although I have tried it and find it nicely refreshing as a cleanser, I'm reviewing it on how it's transformed my boyfriends skin. (Yes, yes, I'm a pushy girlfriend that gets him to look after his skin and no he doesn't know what a cleanser actually is).

He is a typical oily skin type and I can say that I have noticed a difference in him using this. From what he tells me he uses this at least once every day followed by a toner. A pump or two onto a cotton pad to be wiped over the face does the trick. It's definitely reduced the appearance of excess oil on his skin (less of a shine) and it's now also softer to touch. As I said I've used it too, I think it's a refreshing alternative to the usual cleansers you find but I don't think it removes make-up as well (hopefully not a problem for Laurence).

His personal review on it - 

"This one smells nicest" and "I like it". 

Maybe I should suggest him to start a blog too, where he can say if products are "alright" and fellow men can say "cheers" and "mate".

Next up: The Cleansing Balm for Dry to Very dry skin. So I'm a typical bloody combination skin, I have very small oily areas such as my chin but mostly my skin is dry as a bone. I always look for products for very dry skin hoping it will change my life forever. 

This does everything a cleanser should do. It removes make-up very well and it leaves my skin beautifully soft. I don't find that there's anything in particular that I can fault with it. In fact it's pretty high up there when it comes to high street cleansers. What I can say about all the No7 products I've tried is that they do feel luxurious and my skin thanks me every time I use them.

However, I still don't think this is the best.

It's very thick when on the skin rather than one that sinks straight in, thus alluring me into believing that it can only be a saint for my dry flaky skin. I don't think it's any more hydrating than a cleanser intended for normal skin would be. Oh well, maybe it's just me. It does remove make-up very well and very quickly though which is a sneaky bonus.

Luckily for me the search for a cleanser that changed my life is over.

Lastly, the Hot Cloth Cleanser.

This is a cleanser that comes with a Muslin Cloth. If you haven't used a cleanser designed for this purpose I highly recommend that you do. Right now! They just feel soooo beautiful during use and after! This one especially. 

It's rubbed in over the top of make-up on dry skin, and removed by dampening a muslin cloth with hot water which is then draped over the face leaving the heat to do the work. You can then use the cloth to slightly polish off any left over product, which also gives a slightly exfoliating effect. 

This does not feel more laborious than using a cotton pad!

It feels wonderful and as sad as it sounds, I look forward to it. It's intended for all skin types and I think it does fit that but is so moisturising on the skin it leaves even my dry skin very soft to the touch after use. It removes make-up very well, even eye make-up such as mascara. 

It comes in a box, like so! And it contains a 200ml bottle (actually larger than the other cleansers) and one muslin cloth. I wash the cloth with just warm water and a little soup after use and hang to dry for the next day. I love the feel of it so much that I sometimes reheat the cloth with water and drape over my face multiple times. This isn't necessary and can be considered mad, but I just love it.

I love a pump dispenser me. This might seem like an odd thing to write about in a review but because of the size it dispenses the perfectly right amount in one pump. Exciting right? No.. just me?

Last but not least I'd also recommend this, the No7 Soft & Soothed Gentle Toner for £8, to use after any of the cleansers listed above as it's just a very good toner for all skin types. 

How much can one person write about cleansers? Good lord!
